Indian River Inlet Bridge – Update

Written on: May 23rd, 2011 in Indian River Inlet Bridge

Concrete pours using the form traveler continue with nine of 24 total sections having been completed.   Other bridge building activities continue to progress as scheduled with the anticipated availability to traffic occurring by late 2011.

Currently, the Phase II traffic pattern is in effect.  Route 1 northbound and southbound will be in dual single-lane traffic in the existing northbound lanes in the area of the Indian River Inlet Bridge.  All median turn lanes in this area are closed.  As a result, Turn Point Road and Inlet Road (also known as Marina Road) will no longer be accessible from northbound Route 1.  Access to Turn Point Road and Inlet Road will be available via southbound Route 1 only.  Access to northbound Route 1 from Inlet Road and Turn Point Road will be via U-turn at 3R’s Road. Access to the south Beach Day Area will continue uninterrupted from the northbound lanes. Detour signs are posted around the work zone to redirect traffic to their desired destinations.   The posted speed limit is 35 MPH through the work zone.

Phase 3 is scheduled to begin on May 31st.  This phase is the disincentive period where the contractor must reconstruct the northbound lanes of Elkton Road before the University of Delaware’s fall semester begins in August.  The City of Newark has added sanitary sewer work to the project that may delay our contractor’s work.  Work is scheduled to be complete in December, 2012.

I-95 Toll Plaza Project – Update

Written on: May 23rd, 2011 in I-95I-95 Delaware Toll Plaza

Final surface paving for northbound cash lanes (north and south of the plaza) continued throughout the week of May 16, weather permitting.  Installations of northbound overhead sign structure trusses between the Maryland state line and the toll plaza were rescheduled to begin Thursday night, 5/19/2011.  A left lane closure of southbound I-95 is needed to complete the exterior work on the west side of the overhead gantry.  Custom glass panels are being installed on the overhead walkway (northbound satellite plaza).  Sunday work is anticipated through Memorial Day weekend, but should not involve lane closures.  Building activities were accelerated to meet a target date of 5/19 for beginning of southbound EZ Pass lanes operational testing of the tolling system.  The project is scheduled for completion in August 2011.

Indian River Inlet Bridge – Update

Written on: April 28th, 2011 in Indian River Inlet Bridge

Construction:    Currently, Skanska is working on the fourth pour of 12 pours on the northside of the bridge, and on pour three of 12 on the southside of the bridge.  New sets of stay cables will continue to be installed with each new 24’ section of bridge being constructed by the form traveler.   Proper stay tensioning is critical to the support of the 300 ton form traveler system and the newly constructed bridge deck sections.  Also, the transition pier, which is the connection point between the traditional bridge and the cable-stay portion, will be completed over the next several months.  It is one of the last areas to be completed because its construction hast to be carefully coordinated with the construction of the cable stays in order to properly balance the loads on the bridge.  The bridge is currently on track to be available to traffic this December.

Roadway Approach/Bridge Demolition:   George & Lynch is steadily working to construct temporary crossovers in preparation for the switch to Phase II prior to Memorial Day.  This Phase II/new traffic pattern will allow construction of the roadway approaches to the new bridge and will consist of one lane in each direction over the existing bridge.   Roadway approach and bridge demolition is expected to be completed in mid-2013.

Site Tours:   Site tours are available on Wednesdays during the summer months, but please call to schedule.  New this year – we have three Friday site tours available to accommodate summer visitors to the area.

Schedule your site tour today as spaces are filling up fast!  Submit a request online at irib.deldot.gov or contact DelDOT Public Relations at 302-760-2080.

Elkton Road Construction – Update

Written on: April 21st, 2011 in Elkton Road

A value engineering proposal (VEP) has been proposed to and accepted by the Department to allow the contractor to enter into Phase III traffic pattern earlier than planned. The proposal allows the contractor an alternate method to install the new water main.  The VEP change will save DelDOT money  and will give the contractor a better chance to complete the Phase Three work before the beginning of the University of Delaware’s fall semester.  Work is scheduled to be complete in December 2012.

Indian River Inlet Bridge – Update

Written on: March 25th, 2011 in Indian River Inlet Bridge

George & Lynch was recently awarded the $11,625,940 project which will build the roadway approaches for the new Indian River Inlet Bridge and demolish the existing Indian River Inlet Bridge.  This work will include construction of the new roadway approaches to the new bridge and the demolition of the existing bridge. The first phase of work includes the construction of temporary cross-overs on SR 1 to establish a new traffic pattern that will allow construction of the roadway approaches.  This traffic pattern will allow for one lane of traffic in each direction (there are currently two available in each direction).  Work is scheduled to begin March 28, 2011, with the new traffic pattern in place prior to Memorial Day.  The project is expected to be complete in mid-2013.
