Indian River Inlet Bridge – Update

Written on: April 28th, 2011 in Indian River Inlet Bridge

Construction:    Currently, Skanska is working on the fourth pour of 12 pours on the northside of the bridge, and on pour three of 12 on the southside of the bridge.  New sets of stay cables will continue to be installed with each new 24’ section of bridge being constructed by the form traveler.   Proper stay tensioning is critical to the support of the 300 ton form traveler system and the newly constructed bridge deck sections.  Also, the transition pier, which is the connection point between the traditional bridge and the cable-stay portion, will be completed over the next several months.  It is one of the last areas to be completed because its construction hast to be carefully coordinated with the construction of the cable stays in order to properly balance the loads on the bridge.  The bridge is currently on track to be available to traffic this December.

Roadway Approach/Bridge Demolition:   George & Lynch is steadily working to construct temporary crossovers in preparation for the switch to Phase II prior to Memorial Day.  This Phase II/new traffic pattern will allow construction of the roadway approaches to the new bridge and will consist of one lane in each direction over the existing bridge.   Roadway approach and bridge demolition is expected to be completed in mid-2013.
